Sustainable sanitation goes beyond toilets.

In 2017, the UN reported that 6 out of 10 people on the planet lack access to safely managed sanitation and that 80 per cent of wastewater is being dumped untreated. Water scarcity is also a global problem. By 2025, 66 per cent of the world’s population will live in water-scarce regions. Severe droughts impose water rationing affects places like California, Rome and Cape Town. And while freshwater is scarce, climate change has caused increasing urban floods that lead to cholera outbreaks and bathe whole cities in raw sewage.

Plumbed sewerage, which currently serves approximately 27% of the global population, is unviable in most parts of the world, and will become less viable as water scarcity increases.

Providing sanitation goes beyond building toilets. It requires the safe collection, transport and treatment of fecal sludge. Loowatt develops toilets and pre-treatment technology, that support an efficient service that meets the standards of governments and utilities and can be scaled to address the sanitation challenges of growing urban centres.

In the UK, waste generated from our toilets is treated in utility run anaerobic digestion systems that recover energy and fertiliser from waste. In Madagascar, we have been piloting a household sanitation service which links to small scale anaerobic digestion treatment systems.

We work in partnership with world class utilities and waste treatment agencies to deliver the future of waterless sanitation and distributed treatment.
